History: What is and what to serve?

It is simple to define what is and what serves many careers, such as geography, medicine, dentistry ... But history?! What is this? Common sense would respond swiftly and without hesitation: is the study of past career for those who like old stuff. And what's the point? Hey to be a teacher!

Well, fortunately, I'm one of those people who chose this career. And indeed, history does not always have to do with what think.As answers we give are evidence of our lack of knowledge. History is much more than that, and your opportunities are going well beyond.

How did you come?

History comes from Greek and means "research". The story, as we understand it today, appeared in VI BC, but there has always been man's need to explain its origin and your life, giving rise to myths. As a way of explaining the history comes together to philosophy. The Greek Herodotus is considered the father of history, because it employs the term to mean "research". It is noteworthy that the philosophy of knowledge covering several areas that were not yet autonomous, such as mathematics, psychology, politics, biology, astronomy, among others.
The Greeks then used the story to know the polis, to understand the changes and may apply other solutions.

What is and what it serves?

Its function is to provide an explanation of society itself. To do so, even today, the historian makes use of other areas of knowledge, which become secondary tools for the interpretation and visualization of the size of the object of study, the story becomes an interdisciplinary area. The historian can be used in psychology, for example, to understand the mythology, among others.
Thus, the essence of the story are the social changes and the time is the dimension of historical analysis. Emphasizing that the changes do not occur in an evolutionary way and much less linear.
Yet history, studies the past but can study the past to understand the present. Think therefore what the history is, it is mere speculation, since, as said the changes do not always occur in a linear and predictable.
